A trigger point is a hyper-irritable spot within a taut band of skeletal muscle fibers—commonly referred to as a "muscle knot." These points are often the result of acute trauma, repetitive strain, or postural stress, which causes the muscle to stay in a state of constant contraction.
The Mechanism: This localized contraction restricts blood flow (ischemia), leading to a buildup of metabolic waste products and a lack of oxygen in the tissue. This "energy crisis" sensitizes the local nerve endings, causing pain.
Referred Pain: A hallmark of a true trigger point is its ability to "refer" pain to other parts of the body. For example, a trigger point in the upper trapezius often manifests as a headache behind the eye.
Clinical Impact: Beyond pain, trigger points can cause muscle weakness, restricted range of motion, and autonomic disturbances. Effective treatment typically requires direct manual therapy or "ischemic compression" to release the taut band and restore normal circulation and tissue length.
