Physiatry & Physiotherapy is a primary healthcare profession focused on restoring, maintaining, and maximizing a patient’s mobility, function, and overall well-being. It utilizes physical methods—rather than drugs or surgery—to treat injuries, ailments, or deformities.
By combining clinical expertise with evidence-based techniques, patients recover from acute trauma, manage chronic conditions, and improve physical performance through individualized treatment plans.
Common Physiotherapy Modalities
Health care providers utilize various "modalities"—tools or physical agents—to decrease pain, reduce inflammation, and improve the body's natural healing response. Here are a few we use:
Manual Therapy Hands-on techniques where the therapist manipulates joints and soft tissues. This includes massage, mobilization, and manipulation to improve flexibility and reduce muscle tension.
Therapeutic Exercise Customized movement programs designed to strengthen specific muscle groups, improve cardiovascular health, and restore range of motion.
Cryotherapy (Cold Therapy) The application of ice packs or cold compresses to constrict blood vessels. It is primarily used to reduce acute swelling and numb sharp pain following an injury.
Thermotherapy (Heat Therapy) The use of heating pads or warm packs to increase blood flow and relax tight muscles. This is often used for chronic pain or to "warm up" tissues before stretching.
Electrical Stimulation (E-Stim / TENS) The use of mild electrical currents to stimulate muscles or interfere with pain signals sent to the brain. It is highly effective for pain management and muscle re-education.
Ultrasound Therapy High-frequency sound waves that penetrate deep into soft tissues. This creates "micro-vibrations" that generate deep heat, promoting cellular repair and increasing tissue elasticity.
Laser Therapy (Cold Laser) The application of specific wavelengths of light to interact with tissue. It is used to accelerate the healing process by stimulating mitochondrial activity in damaged cells.
Traction A technique used to take pressure off the spine. By gently stretching the spine, it creates space between vertebrae to treat herniated discs or nerve impingement.
